9 Ways to Eat SMART this Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is less than a week away and we’ve all got food on the brain. If you’re dieting, this time of year can feel like your worst nightmare but it doesn’t HAVE to. We as humans live for food and not just because we literally need it to survive. For most of us, it’s our lives. My husband and I go out for a date every week. What do we do? EAT! Every family gathering revolves around a meal. And holidays just magnify our need to shove our faces together. Get this: It’s important to ENJOY the food even if not as healthy as you’d like. It’s important to make memories with family & friends and a big part of that is eating the food, not hiding in the corner avoiding it. I’m going to give you KEY tips to love every minute of a holiday party and not regret your decisions. Here we go…

WORK YOUR BUM OFF!
Get it..like right NOW! Starting a week or so before the main event, work harder than you ever have in your workout. Seriously, give it your all. It’s perfectly fine to have a cheat day as long as it’s not every single day. Thanksgiving is your cheat day for the week. Eat your healthiest and kick butt in those workouts! You won’t feel as guilty at the party. 😉

BRING A HEALTHY DISH
When I was a kid, I remember the host of the party preparing all of the food but it seems things have changed. Now it’s custom for each guest to bring something to the table. Now’s your chance to sneak something healthy (yet delicious) in the mix. Check out Pinterest. I’ve seen some fruit and dip trays. Look for HEALTHY dip! They’re out there and they look yummy. EAT FIRST
You’re going to the party to eat, so why in the world would you eat PRIOR? I’ll tell you why! If you’re absolutely starving and you head over to a party with endless cheese trays and snack bowls you’ll start shoving everything and everything into that pie hole of yours. Instead, eat a light snack before leaving the house. Think yogurt, fruit, salad, cottage cheese, etc. Just have a little something in your stomach without being full OR hungry.

WATER, WATER, AND YES, MORE WATER!
Fill up on water before and during dinner. I play this trick on a daily basis. I seriously think I have an eating problem sometimes. Once I start, I just can’t stop eating. However, drinking water fills me up so I don’t end up eating as much.

SMALL PLATES
It sounds silly and you may feel like you actually belong at the kids table but eating off a smaller plate tricks your mind to think you’re actually getting way more food than you really are resulting in a more satisfied tummy! Seriously, try it out. Grab both a large and small plate, put the same amount of food on each and see which one looks more appetizing.

A LITTLE GOES A LONG WAY
So maybe you can’t control the size of your host’s plates. No biggie, just make sure you have a level head when scooping those mashed potatoes on your plate. Try a little of all your favorite foods. You don’t need heaping spoonfuls to satisfy your cravings. Start with just a little and if you’re still not feelin the love, have just a little bit more. It’s not everyday you have Thanksgiving fixins after all!

OPT FOR COFFEE
Instead of an elaborate dessert, stick with the coffee. Aint no harm in that, right? If you have a serious sweet tooth, search the table for fruit or only have a few bites of pumpkin pie. 

KNOW WHEN TO SAY NO
After eating perhaps just a little too much of the good stuff, the hostess will guilt you into taking leftovers home with you. Sound familiar? Don’t give in! You don’t need those calories tempting you in the middle of the night or the next day for breakfast.

AND WORK YOUR BUM OFF ONCE AGAIN
There’s nothing more satisfying than burning off all those calories you just ate the day before. All that junk food can make you feel sluggish so get right back into your routine. Get a good workout in and stick to your diet. One day off can lead to another which could lead to forever. Remember your goals and don’t let one cheat day keep you from them!   

Just because you’re on the path to being fit doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the time with family and the amazing food. A few SMART decisions can go a long way! You can do it!
