It’s not about the gifts. It’s not about spending money. It’s not about fancy dinners. It’s not about bonuses and gift cards. It’s not about twinkling lights and and sparkly decorations. It’s not about gingerbread houses and hot cocoa. It’s not about vacations and traveling. It’s not about shopping and incredible deals. It’s not about eating yourself sick and drinking at parties. It’s not about movies and singing carols.
Many of these things are traditions and are important to people. I’m not trying to dis them. But sometimes we get so caught up in what we think makes Christmas Christmas. If asked to describe the holiday, you’d most likely use the activities above. But what does Christmas REALLY mean? What’s it really all about?
This is personal. Everyone has their own view of the meaning of Christmas. For me, that would be spending quality time with the person that means the most to me. That person would be my husband, Justin. This holiday season has really put everything into perspective for me. Sure, we’re still doing our normal traditions like PJ’s on Christmas Eve, sleeping out in the living room next to the “tree” (this year it’s only a little tabletop tree), driving around the neighborhood with the puppy looking at Christmas lights, opening presents bright and early, hanging out in our PJ’s all day eating chili.. you get the idea. Those traditions are important to us but there’s a deeper meaning behind them. Every single one of those involves quality time together. That’s what it’s all about.
This year, we’re enjoying a stress free Christmas. It may seem strange to some people that we aren’t running around visiting family, going to parties, and attending a traditional Christmas dinner. Don’t get me wrong, our family means the world to us. So do our friends. And co-workers. But once we get wrapped up in all these other events, it leaves little time for just us.
The holidays aren’t a time to stress. It’s time to take it EASY! This is your last “break” before getting down to business with your New Year goals. If you’ve been following my Facebook page, you know I’ve already been on top of setting goals for 2016. I actually have to work at shutting my brain off for Christmas so I can fully relax. You need this time. You need it for you and your loved ones. You need to reconnect and build those relationships. Of course this can be worked on throughout the year but this is the perfect opportunity to make it happen. You most likely have some time off work so there’s no excuses!
SO, this year instead of going to that fancy party with people you hardly know, spend time with the person or people that mean the most to you. And I mean really spend time with them. Put your phone down, have REAL conversations with them, talk about the future, reminisce about the past, and get to know that person like you never have before. On that note, I must go finish up some work so I can spend that special time with my hubby. Hope you all enjoy a very Merry Christmas!
Remember, focus on what Christmas is really all about for YOU!
